TO STRENGTHEN THE IMMUNE SYSTEM WITH ESSENTIAL OILS
Essential oils Carrier oils Diffusers Face Body Schythe

We are sure that with the onset of the cold months, we start to think more and more about how to support the immune system, how to prepare it for the upcoming flu and viral infections. The options and suggestions are thousands, we believe that each of us must trust the moderate and balanced support. Natural products such as essential oils are excellent supplements to enhance the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle. Although still subject to research and study, the immune-boosting properties of essential oils are finding increasing recognition in the world of alternative medicine. The growing amount of data on their application demonstrates their efficacy.

Medical experts agree that the reason why this period is known as cold and flu season is not so much because of the cold weather itself, which further predisposes our bodies, but because of the tendency to spend more time indoors. This also makes us more susceptible to various bacteria and viruses. Perhaps we should get used to the thought that our strong immunity should not be a priority only on cold days, but should be a year-round and daily care for our health. Well, even if this seems like a difficult task to us now, given all the commitments that haunt us every day, if we learn how to include the little things in our daily life, we will easily turn them into useful habits.

Before we incorporate aromatherapy and essential oils into our daily lives to support immunity, it is a good idea to first and foremost lead a healthy lifestyle. Here are some useful tips that we believe each of us should follow…

Essential oils to boost the immune system

Healthy lifestyle, healthy immune system

And the reverse is also true – to lead a healthy lifestyle, you need a strong immune system.

Experts in the field are studying ways for our bodies to produce the best possible immune responses.

The immune system is responsible for protecting your body from environmental threats. For this purpose, the immune system uses a variety of cells, tissues and organs, many of which are common to other body systems. The immune system's first line of defense is your skin. It acts as a barrier that keeps outside invaders out. The mucous membranes in the nose, mouth and throat also protect your body from invaders by trapping potential threats and preventing them from entering the body.

When environmental threats get past these defense mechanisms, white blood cells spring into action. White blood cells detect invaders, identify them as harmful, and destroy them. But that's not all - they also remember the invaders, so if they try to attack you again, your body can stop them even faster. White blood cells are produced and stored in various places in the body, such as the tonsils, thymus, lymph nodes, bone marrow, and spleen.

Keeping the immune system functioning properly depends on many things:

  • No unwanted infections! Maintaining good hygiene of the body and the place where we live is still the best way to protect our health. Regular hand washing, covering the mouth with a tissue whenever we sneeze or cough, airing the room daily, regularly changing bed linen are some of the simplest preventions against unwanted bacterial and viral infections. Indeed, these simple things are not to be overlooked, especially in the times in which we live.
  • Stick to a healthy diet! Although when it comes to nutrition, there is no one-size-fits-all option for each of us, it is still important to follow a healthy and balanced diet, high in fruits and vegetables, healthy carbohydrates and fats. Foods rich in vitamins and minerals can do wonders for our body! If you are fond of meat products, make sure that the dishes are well cooked - this way you would also avoid unwanted infections.
  • Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight. Sure, we see this advice a lot, but how do we really get into the habit of moving more? We could be more motivated when our friend joins the sport we like and we practice it together every day. Thus, the motivation is mutual and the results will certainly be better. Good habits, good motivation, good friends!
  • Balance the stress level in the body. Sometimes it is difficult to determine the level of stress - a stressful situation for one person may not have as strong an impact as for another. Studies show that stress suppresses the immune system, and it is believed that various diseases - stomach, heart, are related to the consequences of experiencing severe stress. Good sleep and real rest for the mind (the so-called "switching off") reduces stress levels in the body, which in turn keeps the immune system healthy.

Plants have been shown to possess immunomodulatory properties, affecting various parts of the immune system, both at the cellular and molecular level. We strongly recommend that essential oils be used topically, by diluting them in a base/vegetable oil, in the form of an ointment or by diffusing, in the organic store MaKaSa we offer diffusers for any room.

7 essential oils that can support the immune system

The most important properties you look for in an essential oil that could support your immune system are antibacterial and antiseptic. Here are our suggestions for some of the most popular essential oils that are recommended and have an immunostimulating effect.

1. Lemon essential oil

Lemon essential oil has natural antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties. It combines well with other essential oils, such as lavender, rose, sandalwood, chamomile, eucalyptus, frankincense, geranium, mint, which makes it extremely popular among aromatherapy lovers. It is also a natural disinfectant and can be used as an ingredient in a natural cleaning product, such as a spray for all surfaces or a spray for air freshening. In the organic store MaKaSa, you can find lemon essential oils from reputable manufacturers such as Primavera Life and Alteya Organics

2. Tea tree essential oil – Melaleuca alternifolia.

Tea tree is known for its immunostimulating properties. It is an effective decongestant (reduces nasal congestion in the upper respiratory tract) and has expectorant properties, and is a popular ingredient in many homemade salves. Used in a diffuser, it can help with colds, sinus infections, and viral infections. Pairs well with oils of: cinnamon, sage, geranium, lavender, lemon, myrrh, nutmeg, rosewood, rosemary, thyme. If your essential oil starter kit doesn't include tea tree oil, you can add it and be sure you will find many useful applications for it.

3. Eucalyptus essential oil – Eucalyptus globulus.

Eucalyptus supports a healthy respiratory system, similar to tea tree oil, as it also has expectorant properties. One of the most popular components included in expectorants, antiseptics and breath fresheners (candies, toothpastes, syrups). It is obtained by steam distillation of the leaves and branches of the tree. There are many varieties of eucalyptus trees (over 500!), but the most popular are only three different varieties: Eucalyptus globulus, Eucalyptus radiata, Eucalyptus citriodora. They have some of the most popular benefits of eucalyptus: Globulus for respiratory/antibacterial effects, Radiata supports the immune system and relieves muscle strain, Citriodora is added to mosquito repellents or fungal infections.

4. Peppermint essential oil – Mentha piperita.

Peppermint is among the most common essential oils. It can be used to relieve headaches or indigestion. It has detoxifying properties and is believed to help reduce the desire to snack on sweets. Although it has a rather strong aroma, it is pleasant to the respiratory tract and soothing to the respiratory system. Peppermint has antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties that help fight viral and fungal infections, including herpes. Peppermint essential oil also has strong energizing properties – it relieves fatigue and muscle pain. Organic peppermint essential oil is also used for headache relief. It is suitable for direct inhalation through steam inhalation, diffusion in aroma lamps and diffusers and for local application, diluted in a base oil.

5. Oregano essential oil   Origanum vulgare.

Oregano is rich in antioxidants and an effective pathogen fighter, which means it fights bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms that can cause various infections. Its powerful antibacterial action is due to its ability to penetrate cell membranes and disrupt their integrity - under its influence, the cell membrane of bacteria is damaged. Works well against microbes, fungi and parasites. Oregano is a very strong essential oil (the so-called "hot" oil) and its use should be approached with care. For topical application, use very well diluted in a carrier oil, and add a drop or two to the diffuser for an intense herbal aroma.

6. Himalayan cedar essential oil – Cedrus deodara.

Himalayan cedar essential oil has a strong antiseptic effect. It can be diffused for viral infections - colds, coughs (has an expectorant effect), bronchitis and runny nose. It has a calming effect, stimulates good blood circulation, is suitable for relieving acne and skin irritations. In India, Himalayan cedar oil is used to preserve the freshness of spices. There are several types of cedar trees from which essential oil is obtained: Cedrus Atlantica, Cedrus Deodara, Juniperus virginiana (the so-called Wild Cedar). It combines well with all citrus oils, as well as with rosemary, chamomile, eucalyptus and many others.

7. Immortelle essential oil – Helichrysum italicum.

Modern science helps confirm what people have known for centuries: Immortelle essential oil contains special properties that make it an excellent antioxidant, has high antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties. Due to its high content of beneficial chemical components, this essential oil can be used in many different ways to help promote health. Studies show that evening primrose essential oil can help fight infection and reduce inflammation. Immortelle is also used to relieve allergies, colds and coughs, liver and bile problems, inflammatory, infectious disorders and insomnia.

How to safely use essential oils to boost your immune system

Application of essential oils for immunity

The immune system is a set of many biological structures and processes in the body that protect it from diseases. To function properly, it must recognize a wide range of agents called pathogens, from viruses to helminths (the general name for parasitic worms living in a host (human or animal), and distinguish them from the body's own healthy tissue. A healthy immune system it can help you fight off more serious illnesses as well.

Essential oils can support your immune system in several ways. The most pleasant, in our opinion, is by diffusing the aroma and beneficial properties with an aroma diffuser or by applying them topically diluted in a carrier oil to the skin. Remember, we will never tire of repeating that essential oils should be applied well diluted! If this is your first time using essential oils, here are some interesting ideas to try to get acquainted with these amazing gifts from nature.

Apply topically

If you're not feeling well, lacking energy and generally feeling lethargic, apply the essential oil blends to the soles of your feet and put on warm socks. Feet are among the fastest absorbing parts of the body, so applying essential oil salves to your feet will help their beneficial chemicals reach your bloodstream faster! Other fast-absorbing areas include the neck and the area behind the ears. It is also recommended that you apply essential oils to your chest and throat if you have a cough, difficulty breathing, or a stuffy nose. Here are some recipes for massage oils that you can apply for seasonal ailments:

Inhale with aroma diffuser

One way you can protect your home from unwanted viruses and bacteria is by diffusing essential oils. For this you will need a diffuser. In this way, your home will not only smell very nice, but the air will also be moistened, which will relieve dry sinuses and coughs. In the organic shop Makasa, we offer different blends for diffusers depending on the desired effect.

Storage rules

When storing essential oils, it is important to be aware that light, heat and oxygen can affect the integrity of the oil. The products must come from a reliable source, they must be certified by the relevant authority in the specified country to be sure of their quality. Following the instructions carefully reduces the risk of compromising your health.

Safety rules

Some beauty and household products such as lotions, makeup and candles contain ingredients that may appear to be essential oils but are actually synthetic fragrances. Like medicines, essential oils should be treated with respect. It is important to seek professional advice and carefully follow the instructions on the packaging of the products you purchase.

Important for ingesting essential oils

We trust the International Federation of Aromatherapists, which does not recommend that essential oils be taken internally unless the application is under the supervision of a physician qualified in clinical aromatherapy! Taken orally, the oils can damage the liver, kidneys and nervous system. They can lead to interactions with other drugs and undergo unexpected changes while in the gut. T

Because essential oils cause chemical reactions in the body, they can cause adverse effects when combined with medications. They can reduce the effectiveness of conventional medicines or can exacerbate a person's health conditions. Those of you with high blood pressure, for example, should avoid using stimulant essential oils such as rosemary. Certain combinations, such as fennel, anise and sage, have similar effects to the hormone estrogen and should be avoided by people with breast or ovarian cancer who are highly dependent on the production of this hormone.

Concentrated products can be poisonous before dilution and must be handled with great care. The maximum concentration is recommended to be up to 5%, but only for extremely healthy people.

How to do an allergic reaction test

Dilute the essential oil in a carrier oil at twice the concentration you plan to use. Rub the mixture over a quarter-sized area on the inside of your forearm. If you don't have an allergic reaction within 24 to 48 hours, the essential oil is safe to use. Some people report developing allergies to essential oils after using them many times before. If this happens to you and a new allergic response occurs, you should immediately stop using it and avoid its smell.

Those of you who have the following conditions should be especially careful when using essential oils at home:

  • Allergy and hay fever.
  • Asthma.
  • Skin conditions, such as eczema or psoriasis.

People who suffer from epilepsy, hypertension or high blood pressure should also be extremely cautious when using essential oils.

Important for some conditions

The use of aromatherapy by pregnant or nursing mothers has not been proven safe through research, so it is not recommended. During the first trimester of pregnancy, aromatherapy may pose a risk to the developing fetus. Women who are breastfeeding should avoid peppermint essential oil, as it can also be expressed in breast milk. Essential oils derived from citrus fruits can make the skin more sensitive to ultraviolet light, increasing the risk of sunburn. Some oils can affect the function of conventional drugs, so people using drugs of any type should first consult a qualified pharmacist or doctor.

The information in this article is for educational purposes only and is not intended to serve as a basis for prevention or treatment! The International Federation of Aromatherapists does not recommend that essential oils be taken internally unless the application is under the supervision of a physician qualified in clinical aromatherapy!
