Skin care isn't just about cleansing and moisturizing. True protection starts with sun protection—the most important step to maintaining healthy, youthful skin at any age.
Mineral (or physical) sunscreens use natural filters — such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide — to reflect UVA and UVB rays before they reach the skin. Unlike chemical creams, which absorb ultraviolet radiation and generate heat, mineral products create a physical shield on the skin's surface.
This makes them the safest and most effective option for daily protection of the face, body and even hair.
Mineral filters stay on the skin and do not enter the bloodstream. In contrast, FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) studies show that chemical ingredients (such as oxybenzone) penetrate the bloodstream even after a single application and act as endocrine disruptors, disrupting hormonal balance. Zinc oxide is the only active ingredient that the FDA has categorically recognized as safe and effective.
Because they don't penetrate the skin, mineral filters don't clog pores or cause inflammation. For rosacea or active breakouts, zinc's natural anti-inflammatory properties even help soothe the face.
The sun emits two types of harmful rays:
UVA rays: Lead to collagen loss and cause age spots and wrinkles.
UVB rays: Responsible for sunburns and most cancers.
Zinc oxide is a broad-spectrum filter that effectively protects skin cells from both types of radiation simultaneously.
Mineral creams provide protection immediately after application. There is no need to wait 15-30 minutes, as with chemical products. This makes them extremely convenient for busy daily lives, for athletes and children.
About 14,000 tons of sunscreen end up in the oceans every year. Chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate are causing bleaching and coral reef destruction (even if you shower at home, the chemicals end up in your water supply through sewage treatment plants). Mineral sunscreen is the only right, environmentally friendly choice.
Exposure to UV rays occurs constantly — even on cloudy days, indoors near windows, or with very brief exposure to the sun.
Between 80% and 90% of visible signs of aging are due to sun damage.
Hair also suffers — UV radiation makes it dry, damaged, and lackluster. Sun protection for hair preserves its structure and color.
To make sure you're making the best choices for your health, follow this quick guide:
| What to LOOK FOR (Checklist) | What to AVOID (Harmful Ingredients) |
| Zinc oxide / Titanium dioxide (as sole active ingredients) | oxybenzone & Octynoxate (hormone disruptors) |
| Broad spectrum protection (UVA and UVB) | Avobenzone & Homo salads |
| SPF 25 or higher | Retinyl palmitate, retinyl acetate or retinol (in daily cosmetics) |
| Water resistance | PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid) & Mineral oil |
| Certified organic/natural composition | Parabens and phthalates |
SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays.
SPF 30 blocks almost 97% of UVB radiation.
SPF 50 blocks only 1% more than SPF 30.
Important: A higher factor does not mean you can stay in the sun longer, it indicates the percentage of rays blocked. It is better to apply a product with SPF 25-30 regularly than a one-time application of a very high factor.
Baby's delicate skin requires special attention. Dermatologists and pediatricians recommend only mineral sunscreens (waterproof, fragrance-free, and irritant-free) for children over 6 months of age, with an SPF of 30 or higher . Of course, seeking shade and wearing protective clothing remain mandatory.
Sunscreen only works if it's applied correctly. Here's how:
Don't skimp on the amount: For an adult in a swimsuit, you need about one full shot glass for the entire body. For the face, neck and décolleté, you need half a teaspoon.
Don't forget the details: Lips, ear tips, and eyelids also burn.
Consider your activities: For everyday life in the city, a standard cream is sufficient, but for the beach, hiking, or running, be sure to choose a waterproof formula.
Reapply: Do it every two hours, as well as after sweating or drying yourself with a towel.
Keep an eye on water resistance: Check the label — products are usually water resistant for 40 or 80 minutes of immersion in water.
Combine with shade: Avoid the sun during peak hours (10:00 AM – 16:00 PM) and wear hats and sunglasses.
