In the world of aromatherapy, the scent of vetiver essential oil is known for its fresh, earthy, but also cooling and balmy notes. This oil is popular for its ability to promote feelings of confidence and calmness, effectively reducing irritability, panic and anxiety. The fortifying properties of vetiver oil can contribute to the overall balancing of emotions. But in addition to these qualities, vetiver also has a number of other properties that are beneficial for our body and mind. Here we will tell you briefly about this amazing essential oil, which deservedly bears the name "The aroma of the earth".

Origin and interesting facts

Vetiver is a popular plant native to Asia , especially India and Sri Lanka, where it is known as khus , " Oil of Calm" or "Scent of the Earth" due to its earthy, sensual and deeply calming aroma.

Vetiver is a tall tropical grass, a perennial plant, with long thin and stiff leaves, and a distinctly aromatic root system. Most herbaceous plants form a horizontal root network, but vetiver sends its roots deep – up to 34 meters deep. The plant helps stabilize the soil and protects it from erosion.

Since ancient times, almost the entire Vetiver plant has found various uses, including for the production of perfumes, soaps, household goods - mats, hats, belts, ropes, etc.

Interestingly, in tropical countries, vetiver roots were traditionally used to make cooling curtains at home. The dried roots of the plant were woven together with coconut rope, after which the resulting curtain was irrigated with water. The finished knitting was hung on the windows and doors, and as the hot air passed through the already wet roots, a cool and fragrant air entered the room, scented with a soothing, alluring, earthy aroma. This type of curtains also protected against insects.

6 interesting facts about Vetiver essential oil

  1. The essential oil is obtained from the aromatic roots of the plant Vetiveria zizanioides. The best quality oil is extracted slowly, from the roots harvested between the 18th month and the 2nd year after the cultivation of the plant. The roots are dug up, cleaned and then dried. Before being distilled, they must be soaked in water for at least 24 hours.
  2. Like sandalwood и patchouli, vetiver oil has the ability to unfold the grandeur of its aroma over time - the more it ages, the deeper and richer the aroma becomes. Typically, the time required for aging is 6 months.
  3. Vetiver roots are strong, complex and highly aromatic and grow deep into the earth. In India, the roots of the largest vetiver crops can grow deeper than tree roots.
  4. Vetiver is an incredibly hardy type of grass. Able to thrive at temperatures up to 50°C and down to -10°C.
  5. Vetiver is considered one of the most popular extracts in modern perfumery. It is used in perfumes such as Guerlain, Miss Coco from Chanel, Miss Dior from Dior, Opium from Yves Saint Laurent. Vetiver is used to flavor mainly men's cosmetics.
  6. Vetiver oil promotes the regeneration of new skin cells, making it a highly sought-after ingredient in dermatology.
