Benzoin is the aromatic resin of the tropical evergreen benzoin tree of Siam. The resin is obtained by cutting the bark of the benzoin tree, which can reach a height of up to 20 meters. After contact with air, the resin gradually hardens over several days. Subsequently, the bark of the tree regenerates.

The resin has been used as a fragrance for perfumes for thousands of years. It is also steam distilled to produce a balsamic, sweet essential oil.
