Many people like the warm, spicy flavor that fresh ginger root gives to food. But ginger can have health benefits outside of the kitchen as well.

Ginger essential oil is gaining popularity, and for good reason – emerging evidence suggests that this oil boasts an impressive list of health benefits and may be helpful in alleviating the symptoms of a wide range of ailments: from colds to autoimmune diseases.

What is ginger essential oil good for and how is it extracted?

Ginger essential oil

Ginger essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the root of the herb. Zingiber officinale (relative of turmeric). In aromatherapy, ginger essential oil has stimulating and warming properties. It can improve concentration and calm and reduce feelings of stress, sadness, anxiety, lethargy, agitation, dizziness, and fatigue.

The oil can facilitate the elimination of toxins from the body (for example, through a foot bath), stimulate digestion, relieve stomach and intestinal discomfort, help clear the respiratory tract, and reduce inflammation.

Used topically, ginger essential oil soothes redness, eliminates bacteria, and suppresses signs of skin damage and aging.

In this article, we'll dive deeper into the uses and benefits of ginger essential oil—read all the information and decide for yourself if this extract deserves a place in your aromatherapy routine.

What are the health benefits of using ginger essential oil?

  • Fights inflammation. Sometimes our immune system can’t handle inflammation, and its continued negative impact on the body can lead to a whole host of health problems. So what does this have to do with ginger essential oil? Research shows that ginger extract contains compounds – gingerol and its secondary metabolites – that reduce biomarkers of inflammation and act as immune system modulators. In other words, ginger extract has strong anti-inflammatory properties. The anti-inflammatory nature of ginger oil overlaps with almost all of its benefits.
  • Calms the stomach. Ginger is widely used to relieve nausea and indigestion. A recent study from South Korea found that aromatherapy with ginger essential oil may be effective in relieving nausea. When you’re suffering from an upset stomach, a bottle of this powerful extract and your favorite aroma diffuser will help you fight off those annoying symptoms faster.
  • Improves skin condition. It turns out that ginger oil can also be a boon to your beauty routine. Ginger essential oil has over 40 antioxidant properties that can help protect the skin against free radicals. These are unstable small molecules that are known to cause premature aging. In addition, ginger oil's astringent, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic properties mean that it can help repair the outermost layer of the skin.
  • Supports hair and scalp health. Ginger oil can strengthen hair, soothe itching, and reduce dandruff. This powerful elixir boasts a high mineral content that helps with overall hair health. Its antiseptic, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties go a long way in healing the scalp.
