Ten leading scientists in Germany have published a statement on the informed use of essential oils . It states that essential oils can effectively and significantly supplement the treatment of certain diseases with conventional medicines. They are also suitable for prevention. Since aromatherapy is harmless, if it is of appropriate quality and application, it is now an integral part of conventional medicine, for example in palliative care.
The article, which is published in the issue of “Health Economics & Quality Management” by Thieme-Verlag, is written by ten leading scientists and doctors from various universities in Germany. Its aim is, on the one hand, to reflect the current state of research on essential oil therapy, and on the other hand, to show the possibilities and limits based on scientific research.
It states in detail:
Essential oil therapy improves quality of life
According to the scientists, clinical studies show a significant improvement in the quality of life with independent therapy, but also with a combination of conventional medicine and the use of essential oils. For example, essential oils can significantly improve the quality of life in tumor diseases and alleviate the side effects of conventional therapy. In addition, the severity of the disease is significantly reduced.
Essential oils are safe
When used correctly, experience shows that “slight skin irritation of a mild and transient nature is observed.” Therefore, according to empirical medical assessment, essential oil therapy is particularly suitable for particularly vulnerable patients such as children, the elderly, people with multiple diseases, and those treated with multiple medications.
Patients appreciate the beneficial effect
Many people use essential oils and are very satisfied with their effect. This is known in the circle of doctors and therapists. "Satisfaction can be derived from clinical observations and years of experience," say the authors.
The effectiveness has been proven experimentally
Essential oils and their effects have been extensively studied experimentally. Antibacterial, antiviral, fungicidal and psychological, as well as wound healing, analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of essential oils have been proven in relevant studies.
Their effectiveness in some clinical conditions has also been clinically proven.
According to the scientists, there are clinically representative studies for a number of clinical conditions and symptoms. These include sleep disorders, nervousness, restlessness, anxiety, depression, nausea, vomiting, pain of various causes, menopausal symptoms, and respiratory diseases.
The demand for essential oils is increasing

Global demand for essential oils for use in therapy and prevention is expected to grow to 8,2 billion. USD by 2024 due to high demand. This corresponds to an annual growth of over 8%.
PRIMAVERA co-founder and co-owner Ute Leube comments:
"For us, the scientists' position paper is another important step on the way to science-based and high-quality aromatherapy care.
It confirms our more than 30 years of experience: Essential oils don't just smell good. They are a treat for body, mind and soul.”
Conclusion
According to the consensus of leading German scientists, essential oils can effectively complement conventional treatment and prevention when they are of appropriate quality and applied correctly. For safe home use, follow the guidelines in How to Use Essential Oils Safely.
