What exactly is an essential oil diffuser?

A diffuser is any device that allows a liquid to evaporate, thereby creating a scent in the room. The process of diffusion usually takes place in four different ways:

Humidification – using water and essential oil, a fine mist is formed that fills the air. This mist is produced by a small disc in the device’s container that creates ultrasonic waves.
Ventilation – Evaporation is achieved by using a small fan to create airflow. The air passes through an absorbent pad that traps the essential oil.
Heat – by applying gentle heat, the increased temperature below will cause the essential oil to evaporate into the air.
Nebulization – this is a process that forces the essential oils to break down into very small particles. It requires high velocity, pressurized airflow and a specially designed jet nozzle.

Types of diffusers

There are five main families of essential oil diffusers:

All these essential oil diffusion technologies have the same goal, but the way to achieve it is different. The principle is simple – the dispersed molecules of essential oils in the air are inhaled and thus we enjoy their benefits.

Here we want to pay attention to nebulizers or so-called air humidifiers, which are often advertised as diffusers (you will easily recognize them - they have a filter inside that is immersed in the water in the container). They only serve to humidify the dry air in the rooms and do not have the properties to aromatize with essential oils. The main disadvantages when essential oils are used in a nebulizer that is not designed for this are:

A larger amount of essential oil is needed to feel its aroma.
The space around the device itself is humidified because the diffusion jet is not strong enough and fine enough.
The materials from which the nebulizers are made are not designed for the use of essential oils. They can be deformed by the composition of the oils. Fine plastic particles can even penetrate the water and thus actually lose the entire beneficial effect of using the humidifier.
Cleaning and maintenance are more laborious and take more time and attention.

There are several important questions you need to ask yourself so you can choose the right option for you:

How big is your room?

Don't worry, whether you live in an apartment or a house, we can offer you the right essential oil diffuser! Smaller spaces mean more options, as you won't have a large area to cover. A larger space requires a more powerful diffuser or nebulizer, whose aroma will reach evenly to the farthest end of the room.

When choosing a diffuser, you need to consider how many square meters it covers. For smaller rooms, such as bedrooms and offices, a diffuser with medium vapor strength is suitable. For larger spaces, such as living rooms or open offices, a powerful diffuser or nebulizer is recommended, which can effectively spread the aroma throughout the room. It is also important to note that some diffusers are designed for specific applications, such as meditation or yoga, where it is important that the diffuser works quietly and does not disrupt concentration.

The size of the room determines the type of diffuser and the evaporation power you will need. It is extremely wrong to claim that the size of the diffuser tank also determines how big a room it will be placed in, because it does not matter whether it is 120 ml or 2 liters, as long as it evaporates with the same power.

This marketing trick is very often used to use the larger tank as an advantage. Unfortunately, it is the opposite for two reasons:

Essential oils can oxidize from being left in a reservoir larger than 300 ml for a long time, and will have a negative effect. This is one of the reasons why reputable manufacturers such as Primavera, doTERRA, and Plant Therapy do not produce essential oil diffusers with large reservoirs.
Essential oils do not dissolve in water, but remain on the surface and will therefore evaporate at the beginning of the diffusion. From a hygienic point of view, since you will need to add oils, it is much better to pour clean water, which practically renders the large tank useless when its evaporation power is equal to the diffuser with a small tank.

An ultrasonic diffuser uses water into which a certain number (depending on the model of the device) drops of essential oil are added. The vibrations from the ultrasonic waves cause the water molecules to separate, creating a fine mist that is dispersed by the diffuser.

The diffuser also functions as an ionizer, releasing negative ions into the air, which combat harmful positive ions. In addition to purifying the room and spreading a pleasant aroma, the ultrasonic diffuser also acts as a gentle humidifier. It is especially useful in the cold winter months, in dry climates, for respiratory problems or various skin diseases, as well as when air conditioning is frequently used in the room.

The size of the particles containing essential oil that are dispersed is small enough to be easily inhaled and used for aromatherapy.

Fan diffuser

Diffusing essential oils through cold air ventilation allows for the rapid and even distribution of aromas throughout a room. They are usually extremely durable and their diffusion is clean, as no water is added.

Diffuser NEBULIZER

A nebulizing diffuser breaks down essential oil into small particles using a high-velocity, pressurized air stream and a jet nozzle. When the oil is released from the diffuser, it goes into the air as a fine mist. The fine mist created by the nebulizer does not change the chemical composition or aroma – it diffuses all of the oil at once, instead of in stages.

This type of diffuser does not use heat or water and disperses all the oil into the air with a very intense mist. They are made of wood, glass, ceramic and BPA free plastic. Since they use only the essential oil (no other substances such as water or heat), much more oil is needed for aromatherapy than other diffusers.

Nebulizers are suitable for large rooms, as they saturate the air with the selected essential oils or blends very quickly. In this case, the Primavera Purist nebulizer easily covers rooms of about 80 m².

In our family, every room has a different device for its purpose that helps us enjoy essential oils to the fullest! An important part of maintaining your diffuser so that it works smoothly is to keep it clean. In most cases, rinsing and wiping it with a soft cloth will be enough. But there are oils that are heavier, dense, with an intense color, for which you will need to use an appropriate detergent. Under no circumstances should you wash the diffuser under the tap with heavy abrasive detergents! For this purpose, at MAKASA we have a special detergent with which you can remove dirt.
